Combatting the Cold - Frost Protection for your Winter Garden

With the outside temperatures set to stay down in the doldrums for the next couple of months, theres never been a better time to ensure that youve got the right level of frost protection for your garden.

Its no secret that cold kills tender plants, and having the right frost protection wont just prevent your plants from being damaged “ it will also enable you to get a head start on your planting this year.

Heres what you should be looking to invest in now for a successful years gardening in 2015:

Mulch

Cold weather isnt just bad news for your tender plants “ it can also cause damage to more mature evergreen trees and bushes. This is because when it freezes, the plants struggle to get enough moisture into their roots, which can make them dehydrated, dry and brittle.

One quick and easy way to prevent this is by using a thick layer of mulch around the bases of your trees, which will help to keep the soil from freezing.

Whilst you can buy mulch, making your own is pretty easy, and a great way to recycle your garden waste “ all youll need is some garden trimmings, and your own shredder.

Garden fleece, polythene and cloches

Garden fleece blankets are great for protecting your outdoor potted plants from the cold winter nights. You can also get special plant jackets, and pot covers, which will keep individual plants safe from the frostiest nights.

If you want to get a head start on your planting for 2015, then investing in some polythene sheeting and cloches is also a good idea. You can lay the polythene over your beds, which will help to warm up and dry out the soil, protecting its structure and meaning youll be ready for planting early in the spring.

Right now, you can also start to sow a few hardy early plants under cloches, and in your planting tunnels ready for an early summer harvest.

Cold Frames and Greenhouses

In addition to providing a great place for the overwintering of your plants, greenhouses and cold frames will also enable you to get planting much sooner in the year.

Cold frames are a great solution for smaller gardens. They will provide good frost protection, and will really expand your growing options.
