Alton Amateur 6ft5in x 8ft0in Greenhouse Specification:
Greenhouse Info:
This is the greenhouse range that's been designed for cropping right the way through the winter months. Alton Amateur greenhouses have full length glass panels and sloping sides to make the greatest possible use of the low-angled winter sun. The Amateur greenhouse is economical to heat, too, because the Western Red Cedar is a most efficient thermal insulator.
As you would expect the Amateur Greenhouse offers good eaves height of 1.524mm (5'), or 1650 mm (5'5") on the concrete base, providing excellent headroom.
Amateur greenhouses have Alton's unique Ventaccess sliding ventilators fitted to alternate bays. Used in conjunction with the roof ventilation these provide natural air movement around plants at all levels of the greenhouse. And, as their name suggests, they also give easy access from outside the greenhouse to plants grown underneath the staging.
All easy to erect Alton Amateur Greenhouses are pre-treated and have a wide, sliding door and kerbless doorway for easy wheelbarrow access. An extensive choice of carefully-selected accessories and optional extras is available.

This guarantee is in addition to your statutory rights and is NOT conditional upon you re-treating the cedar frame.
Should I choose an Aluminium or Timber Greenhouse?
The superiority of timber has been proven by independent tests. Growing conditions and fuel usage were compared with a similarly proportioned aluminium greenhouse over 12 months. The results showed that the timber produced a far better growing environment, which produced heavier cropping. It was also shown that watering requirements were less frequent in a timber greenhouse, and that plants grew healthier compared with the reported leaf curl and mould found in the aluminium greenhouse.
Over a year the aluminium cost 18% more to heat because cedar warms up quicker in the daytime and cools slower at night than aluminium, appreciable results for the discerning gardener and proof indeed of the superiority of timber greenhouses.
Aluminium greenhouses do often cost less initially and are generally maintenance free. They are the best choice of greenhouse if your priority is low maintenance.
What do I need to know about Siting my Greenhouse?
Siting your greenhouse is very important with many factors to take into account.
If the greenhouse is badly shaded by trees, hedges, buildings etc., poor results will be obtained from the plants grown in it. Lack of light, especially during the important seed sowing periods will result in weak, spindly seedlings, which seldom mature into robust plants. Light is always a critical factor during the winter so, if possible try to position the greenhouse to run in an east – west direction, then maximum benefit will be gained from the low winter sun.
A sheltered position is another aim, particularly if you live in an exposed position. Protection from cold prevailing winds will reduce heating costs in the winter and prevent possible structural damage from high winds.
Do I need a Base for my Greenhouse?
Most greenhouses require a base except for the Robinsons range, which because of its strength and durability do not require a base other than a solid foundation. A brick, concrete or aluminium base can be used for other manufacturers however all will require concrete foundations.
What should I consider when installing a Greenhouse?
A flat level surface is essential when installing your greenhouse however; this can be made of soil, grass, paving, concrete or a combination of these materials. The most important thing is to make sure you get the base level and square. To get the base square it must be the same length on both sides and the same width at each end, then measure accurately diagonally from corner to corner, once you have the same measurement from both diagonals the base will be square. To obtain this you may have to adjust the side or end measurements slightly, making sure you finish up with the same measurement given by the manufacturer.
Do I need to use Automatic Ventilation?
Automatic ventilation offers convenience and piece of mind, as an unattended greenhouse on a hot summer’s day is potentially just as damaging as an unguarded cold frosty night. Automatic Roof and Louvre Vent openers will automatically open in response to climatic conditions. They are easily fitted to existing greenhouse roof and louvre vents and will increase or reduce ventilation automatically according to the temperature, ensuring the desired balance of heat and humidity.
How do i maintain my Alton Greenhouse?
The Western Red Cedar used on Alton greenhouses is extremely resistant to rot, even so it is recommended that the timbers are treated with water repellent periodically. The length of time between treatments is dependant on site conditions, but is typically every three or four years. The timber should be washed down inside and out with a little domestic detergent, using a firm bristle brush. Allow the timber to dry out completely, and then apply a proprietary cedar treatment, such as Cuprinol Decorative Wood Preserver in Red Cedar. If you do not decide to re-treat the cedar will gradually fade to its natural and attractive silvery appearance.
The glass on all greenhouses should be cleaned as appropriate to maximise the available sunlight.
The gutters should be cleared of leaves and other debris to allow free flow of rainwater.
All door rollers and hinges should be oiled on an annual basis.
