The welly brand was started in 1927 by Claude Chamot, a French agricultural engineer from Cherbourg.
Claude worked closely with the farming community, and was constantly hearing complaints about how uncomfortable and leaky their footwear was. Using his engineering knowhow, he created some boots from natural rubber, and gave away the prototypes to test them with the local farmers.
These new boots were comfortable, hardwearing and flexible – exactly what the farmers wanted. People loved them, and Le Chameau was born. The company expanded significantly throughout the 20th century, but some things stayed the same.
Even as the styles and designs have changed, every pair of Le Chameau boots is still handcrafted in a similar way to those early gumboots. Each pair is made by a single master artisan, helping to maintain the quality and high standards the firm has built its reputation on.
