Birdbaths and feeders

As with your garden and greenhouse, now is the time of year to clean up bird feeders and baths to help keep our feathered friends healthy and happy.

Throughout the summer, your bird feeder will accumulate dirt, and waste, which can result in the spread of disease, which can harm birds and even, be life threatening. Although you may presume your feeder is in a good condition, germs and disease can not be seen by the human eye, so its better to be safe and give your feeder a good clean.

Keep an eye out for any build up of mould as this too can make the birds sick. Through the summer, mould growth is rapid, however mould can still grow in the cooler months. If you notice any mould on your birdseed change it immediately.
You will need to clean your bird feeder twice a week in the summer months, but the need to clean it thought out the winter months is far less. You will be able to reduce the cleaning process to once and month and still ensure your feeder will remain in a clean and healthy state.

Clean plastic and wire feeders well and allow to dry entirely before re-hanging securely and filling with bird feed or seeds. If you have a wooden bird feeder cleaning can prove to be slightly trickier. Brush the feeder out thoroughly removing any grime or dirt build up. When refilling any type of feeder check for any cracks, splinters or sharp pieces of wire which could cause injury to the birds. If you encourage birds to visit your garden it is imperative to allow them a safe and clean place to feed.

Remember to keep birdbaths clean and regularly topped up with fresh water. Remove any old or stagnant water before refilling so you do not pollute the fresh, clean water. It is a good idea to locate your birdbath away from your feeder to prevent any seed or food falling into the water and contaminating it.

By creating a clean and safe environment for birds to feed will encourage grater number to visit your garden and will provide you with all year round enjoyment.
