Cleaning your greenhouse for winter

It is not just your plants that require care and attention at this time of year, but your greenhouse too is ready for a little tender loving care and a good clean out. By cleaning your green house you can be sure it will perform to its full potential next year. It is important to keep the greenhouse glass clean this time of year as in the winter months the sun is much weaker and will struggle to penetrate the glass if a build up of moss, grime and dirt restricts it. Your delicate plants will benefit from the warm rays and will suffer if light and warmth is prevented from entering the greenhouse.

Take care whilst cleaning the glass. Use a long handled broom to clean the hard to reach upper levels and roof and a brush for the lower levels, which are easier to reach. Warm water and elbow grease will shift that grime in no time then simply wipe clean. You will see a noticeable difference and your plants will benefit greatly. It is also a good idea to clean the inside of the greenhouse.

Empty the greenhouse of all plants, and sweep well removing insects, moss, fallen compost and spider webs. Clean trays and pots and stack them up ready to be used again in the spring. It is then time to really scrub all panels, flooring, benches, staging and metal framework using a good garden sterile solution. This will ensure you kill any unwanted insects and fungal diseases which could harm your plants. Remember to allow your greenhouse to ventilate well and dry out completely before returning your plants.

Now is the time of year to consider investing in a greenhouse heater if you do not already have one. Greenhouse heaters will protect your plants throughout even the harshest winter months. At Keen Gardener we have a wide selection of heaters to suit all greenhouses, so take a look today.
