Essential automated garden watering systems for Summer 2016

Summer is on the way, and as the drier, hotter weather arrives, it’s vital to keep your garden effectively watered.

If you’ve got a large garden, then watering can become a time consuming daily grind – especially if you’re relying entirely on your watering can and garden hose to do the job!

The right automatic watering systems will take the time and hassle out of this thankful task. In this post, we take a look at the latest automatic watering products from Hozelock and Claber – the perfect way to prevent your plants from going thirsty this summer.

Automatic watering explained

Automatic garden irrigation systems are designed to take all the work out of watering. They are timed systems that attach to your outside tap, automatically providing your plants with water at pre-determined intervals.

They vary massively in scale, complexity and price, from small, simple units suitable for a few garden pots, to expansive timed systems designed to cover a full range of pots, beds and borders.

Systems are typically made up of the following components:

  • Tap timers – to control when and when the watering happens
  • Connectors – to connect your pipeline to the tap/timer
  • Pipeline – for the water to flow through
  • Dripper fittings – to provide watering outlets for your plants

Kits or create your own?

When it comes to purchasing a system, you have two options: go for a kit, or build your own bespoke system from scratch.

Both Hozelock and Claber offer automatic watering kits, which come supplied with everything you need to get started. They are modular systems, so you can also purchase additional components to expand your system if required.

The alternative is to mix and match components to create your own customised system. Thanks to the modular nature of the system, this is much easier than it might seem.

Our dedicated Hozelock automatic watering guide provides additional information on system design, and many of the same principles can easily be applied to the Claber system.

Hozelock or Claber?

So should you go for Hozelock or Claber? Honestly, it depends on your budget, and what you’re looking for.

Hozelock and Claber are both well established, specialist watering companies, and both offer a wide selection of high quality timers, connectors, pipelines and dripper fittings suitable for the vast majority of gardens.

As a general rule, Hozelock products are more affordable, providing a more cost-effective route. Claber specialises in higher end, technically advanced products at a higher price, with more advanced features.

At Keen Gardener, we only stock products that we’d be happy to use ourselves, and whether you decide to go for Hozelock or Claber, you can be confident that you’re getting a quality product at a great price.
