Summer Wildlife

During the warmer months you may not be the only one enjoying lazy summer days in your garden. Your garden will become a haven for wildlife so keep an eye out for the little visitors.

You may easily notice the population of birds steadily increasing including the addition of blackbird, thrush and robin chicks, but your garden will also become attractive to hedgehogs, rabbits, frogs, squirrels and even badgers.

Birds, butterflies and bugs will flock to your garden if you have a variety of plants from which they can feed.
Lavender is a delicately scented favourite of bees and white finches, who love to feed on their seeds. The plant will add a warm colour and interesting texture to your boarders or herb garden. Lavender can also be used in pots and planters to liven up patios or decking areas.

Honey suckle is also a wonderful choice when you are considering your planting scheme. Not only do honey suckle smell beautiful, but they can also add height and colour to your garden. Honey suckle compliment country cottage style gardens perfectly. The plant’s flowers not only attract insects, but also birds and small mammals who, use the nectar as an additional food source.

Dog rose plants will compliment any garden. Their scented bowl-shaped flowers add a burst of colour and are a popular addition to mixed hedges. They are particularly versatile and grow between 2-13 feet. The rose hips are a favourite food of finches, who will dine on them happily.

Remember to plant your garden full of nectar rich flowers for the spring and summer months and berry rich plants for the autumn and winter months, which will provide food and shelter for visiting wildlife. By considering the plants you use, you can enjoy a wide selection of wildlife into your garden throughout the year.
